What is Husque.

The Husque material is an authentic and innovative composite of locally sourced micronized Macadamia shell and polymer with a polished coloured lining which is applied at the time of molding, this ensures a permanent bond to the Macadamia shell. The form is then rested before it undergoes several hand finishing processes to cut and develop the internal and external finishes. Husque is an original material and concept designed by Marc Harrison. Part of the material inspiration for Husque can be seen in iconic Bakelite examples from the early 1900s, where wood flour was combined with resins and baked into molded forms.

The connection between Husque and Australia

The Macadamia is natures gift to Australia and since 1880 has been Australia’s gift to the world. By inventing a new material from the discarded Macadamia shells, Husque is creating a uniquely Australian design that is also instantly recognized worldwide. The Macadamia nut is a popular delicacy, for both its food source and its oil which is used in products for cooking and cosmetics. The nut shell is a by-product of processing and is sometimes used as a fuel source, mulch and industrial medium. By combining science and art, Husque extends its use and draws attention to its local history while contributing to the magical story of the Macadamia tree in an original way.

NUT FACTS

Macadamias originated in the rainforest on the east coast of Australia and Australia is the only country in the world where they naturally grow in the wild.

There are four species of Macadamia, two of which are used for production of Macadamia nuts in Australia (Macadamia tetraphylla and M. integrifoIia).

Whilst over 80% of wild macadamia trees have been lost since European settlement.

The Hawaiians commercialised the industry in the 1920‘s from wild Macadamia tree seeds sourced from south east Queensland rainforests.
